History

International Cinematographers Guild of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.) Local 667 consists of over 740 members involved in motion picture production, including film, digital, internet and television production, and an additional 80 members in two mid-Canada television stations, located in Sudbury and Timmins, Ontario.

Local 667 is one of many branches of the I.A.T.S.E., which was originally founded in New York City over 100 years ago, in 1893. The I.A.T.S.E., throughout North America, represents not only motion picture camera people and technicians, but also several other areas of entertainment, including stage employees, projectionists, casino employees and studio teachers. The film division of I.A.T.S.E. covers a number of aspects in this industry including camera, wardrobe, hair, lighting, sound, art direction, set design, set construction, special effects, production office staff and much more.

I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 was granted its charter from the International office in October 1981, and represented all I.A.T.S.E. camera personnel across the country. Due to the growth of the motion picture industry in Canada, I.A.T.S.E. Local 669 was formed in 1989 to represent Western Canada, while Local 667 continued to represent Eastern Canada, with the division being the Manitoba / Ontario border. At the producer’s request, members of both I.A.T.S.E. Locals 667 and Local 669 are able to take advantage of free-flow travel, which allows them to work in either jurisdiction.

The I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 membership is involved in all aspects of film and television that pertains to the camera. Our membership consists of Directors of Photography, Camera Operators, Camera Assistants, Unit Stills Photographers, Electronic Camerapeople, Video Assist, Digital Engineers and Technicians and Camera Trainees in all phases of filmed or electronically recorded theatrical feature films, films for television release, internet and television series productions.

Over the past 20 years, I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 has worked on hundreds of film and television productions including such titles as "The Shipping News", "X-Men", "Good Will Hunting", "Moonstruck", "Simon Birch" "The Hurricane", "The Santa Clause", and many television series, including "Soul Food", "Nikita", "Nero Wolfe", and "Due South". The membership has worked with such notable Directors of Photography as Conrad Hall, John Toll, Vic Kemper, Billy Williams, Jack Green, Alan Hume, and Haskell Wexler, to name a few, as well as such Directors as Norman Jewison, Atom Egoyan, Sidney Lumet, Lewis Gilbert, Renny Harlin & David Cronenberg.

It is the mandate of I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 to secure work opportunities, as well as the best conditions and wages for its membership, through Collective Agreements. During 2001, Local 667 was signatory to almost 130 film productions. Through these Collective Agreements, I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 is able to provide the full membership with varying levels of Health and Dental Care Benefits and pension benefits, dependent upon the amount of work each individual does.

I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 offers a solid Training Program for Camera Trainees, whereby a Camera Trainee gains hands-on experience on numerous film sets. At the minimum, most Camera Trainees will work on a television series, movie-of-the-week, and feature film, and learn all equipment including the Panavision, Arricam, Arriflex, MovieCam and Sony systems.

I.A.T.S.E. Local 667 is a freelance organization, which enables the membership to seek work based on experience and merit.
